With the constant changes to curriculum it is important that we always remember the importance of taking time to PLAN learning experiences that meet the learning needs of our students. CPD 4 Teachers takes teachers through the process of backward mapping when programming. We start with the end in mind: What is it we want the students to know and be able to do at the end of the unit? And how will they show their learning?
If teachers have a clear understanding of what the end is then the assessment and learning experiences will be focused on the learning outcome. How often do we see students doing “busy work” that may not be related to the specific outcomes being taught? By utilising the backward design method these busy work activities are eliminated and students have a clear understanding of what they are learning and why.
